On behalf of the Queensland Regional Organising Committee, it is my honour to welcome you to Cairns for the ANZCA ASM 2009. Each year we surpass our expectations and this year promises to be no exception. I have the utmost confidence in assuring you that your attendance at this event will be rewarded. Our Scientific Convenor, Dr James Sartain, has put together what I believe to be one of the most comprehensive and interesting scientific programs, encompassing all aspects of practice in anaesthesia, intensive care and pain management. We appreciate that so many of our esteemed colleagues have agreed to assist with this year's ASM, whether as a speaker in the lecture program or as a facilitator of a workshop or PBLD. This contribution is entirely voluntary, and for this we are truly grateful. The Tropical North Queensland location of the ASM ensures that this is a destination for the whole family, with a social program that will take advantage of the many natural wonders and activities available. I would like to emphasise the initiatives the committee has undertaken to increase the enjoyment for delegates and their families. We have organised complimentary childminding for delegates who wish to attend a session while the partner has some child free time. For those partners with children there will be a meeting point at the water park on the Esplanade. At a loose end in the evening? Why not come down to the designated conference bar to catch up with old friends or make new ones. Most of all, I would like to thank you, the delegate, for without your attendance, we would not have the opportunity to present a scientific and social program of this calibre.
